Binge Eating
December 24th, 2010Rebecca Garnett asked:
Are you a binge eater?? Do you dive into high calories sweets or fatty foods when you’re stressed or depressed? Find out the truth behind your eating habits and how to change them!
Do you ever notice that our moods and food go hand in hand? If I’m bored I find myself eating for no good reason. If you’re weight is not where you want it to be you end up eating more because you figured you’re already not losing weight as it is. We have many reasons for eating, some are good and a lot are bad. We use food as an excuse to make ourselves feel better.
Food is comfort for us, it’s a way to make yourself feel better when you’re depressed, sad, angry, even loneliness. No matter what you’re reason is it’s never going to help you get to your target weight.
Here are a few classic symptoms to determine if you are or not a binge eater!
- trying over and over again to lose weight but continually failing
- having no control over how much you eat, knowing that you should stop but keep on going
- late night eating
- not only eating a lot of food at once but very unhealthy food as well
- always turning to eating when you’re stressed or depressed
- eating when you’re not hungry
- feel guilty after eating large amount and then saying you’ll do something about it tomorrow e.g. eat healthier or exercise
The best thing that you can do for yourself is to admit that you are a binge eater! If you’ve read through these symptoms and decided that’s you, than take back the control of you’re eating habits and start to work towards a healthier you.
Help yourself by changing your lifestyle. When you get hungry check to make sure it’s the right kind of hunger. Are you hungry for emotional reasons, or did you just eat not to long ago so you don’t really need to eat again. If you are really hungry for the right reasons then grab something healthier to eat instead of the junk.
Write down what you eat everyday for a week. You would be surprised how much food we eat and don’t even know it. When you actually see it in front of you that might be motivation enough to change your eating habits.
If you’re upset or depressed and feel yourself heading for those sweets try and change your thought pattern. Try and think more positive and turn to a friend for help instead of food.
Exercising is a great way to help your appetite. Not only will it help with losing weight but it curves your appetite. You will find that you won’t be nearly as hungry when you’re exercising on a regular basis. Drink plenty of water as well; this helps you to feel full.
No matter where you are or what you’re doing, there’s always room for change. Never think that it’s too late! You can do it if you put your mind to it.

How much protein does the average male consume?
December 9th, 2010tstine90 asked:
I want to consume an appropriate amount of protein. I eat 4 meals a day, usually consisting of chicken or beef at night and lunch, I drink 1 or 2 glasses of 2% milk a day, and I try to eat as much peanut butter as I can. I ask because I just purchased some whey protein and I don’t want to consume too much because it is pricey. About how much (rough ballpark) do I consume, I don’t know very much about protein so I need some help. Thanks

Bulimia and Health Complications
November 30th, 2010Michael Russell asked:
Bulimia is generally characterized by periods of bingeing and purging. Bingeing may be defined as an episode wherein an individual consumes a large amount of food in a short period of time, but bingeing can take on a different definition for everyone. Some may consider 1,000 to 10,000 calories a binge while for others, a single chocolate bar can be considered a binge.
After every binge episode, the affected individual feels so terribly guilty and disgusted over his or her actions that he or she needs to eliminate all the calories that were taken in during the bingeing episode. Hence, the purging starts.
Bulimia disrupts the body’s normal functions. As such it can lead to several health complications which can be serious and even life threatening. The complications which are experienced by an individual are highly dependent on the type of purging used.
Among the most common complications are those of cardiovascular, digestive and dental origins. Bulimia is also known to affect the potassium levels in the body fluids and most commonly lead to medication and drug abuse.
. Bulimia leads to a number of cardiovascular problems. Imbalances in the electrolyte levels in the body or the misuse and abuse of a drug called ipecac syrup can cause heart abnormalities. These are known to cause irregular heartbeats, rapid heart rate, chest pains, breathing problems and cardiac arrest. It may also instigate low blood pressure and fainting or dizzy spells.
A word of advice: Ipecac syrup is very dangerous and should only be used to induce vomiting in cases of accidental poisoning. Using it for other purposes such as for purging is considered a grave misuse of the drug and may lead to various problems.
. Forced and frequent vomiting may harm your digestive system. Repeated vomiting instigates the swelling and appearance of sores in the mouth, throat and salivary glands. It may likewise rupture the linings of the stomach and the esophagus, which may lead to serious bleeding. Continued use of laxatives may likewise lead to the dependence on the drug and disrupt the normal bowel function causing constipation and diarrhea. Peptic ulcers, pancreatitis, stomach pain and bloating can also result from this disorder.
. The acidic nature of the gastric contents in the vomit may destroy the teeth enamel leading to an increase in dental cavities. Teeth may also become chipped, ragged and more sensitive to hot or cold food.
. The electrolyte balance in the body is greatly affected by constant purging. When the potassium level in the body becomes critically low, weakness and irregular heart rhythms may be experienced. At worst, death due to cardiac arrest may result from grave electrolyte imbalance.
. Using over-the-counter drugs such as laxatives, diuretics, appetite suppressants and ipecac syrup may make a person dependent on these medications and create a drug abuse issue. This drug dependency may take a step further and instigate alcohol and substance abuse.
Aside from these, bulimia may also trigger the onset of amenorrhea (loss of menstruation) and irregular menstruation, depression or mood swings, hair loss, kidney and liver damage, swelling of the hands and feet (edema) and anemia.

Anorexia & Bulimia Are Really Serious!
November 25th, 2010DeBorrah Ogans asked:
Anorexia and Bulimia are serious compulsive eating disorders that are life threatening. These compulsive behaviors if not properly attended can result in death. This is not to scare you but to inform you that eating disorders are quite serious. I would like to shed some light on a serious subject that many do not like to discuss. In order to reach spiritual wholeness we must be willing to look at all human behavior. Everyone has areas in which they need to grow. Some have a harder time harnessing harmful behaviors. Behavior displayed does not actually display a true indication of how someone really is. Personality is often a veneer that has developed in order to protect the real person. Personalities vastly differ on a multiplicity of levels. Behavior can actually be a plea for help. Compulsive behaviors need immediate attention.
Anorexia and Bulimia is not something that is usually openly discussed. Anorexia nervosa is a self induced starvation that results in a dramatic weight loss. Bulimia is when one binges on large amounts of food that is followed with self induced vomiting or laxative abuse. This can or may not result in weight loss. Both are extremely dangerous and harmful both mentally and physically. Food for many can bring to mind memories of pain, abuse, anger, failure, rejection and or conflict. Although women primarily develop eating disorders, there are approximately 10% of men who are also anorexic or bulimic. Eating disorders usually have their onset during adolescent or teens. They can also develop later on in life.
Anorexia and bulimia origins are nested most frequently in dysfunctional families of varying social economical status. There are currently programs designed for children as well. This should inform you of the seriousness of eating disorders Denial is often an accompanying dynamic. Anorexics usually deny their feelings. They have been taught to suppress their feelings.
Let’s look at some of the symptoms. One of the first symptoms of Anorexia is when a person is focused on how they are too fat; when it is quite obvious that is not the case. They continually shift their desirable weight down. It is not unusual for an anorexic’s hands, feet, and head appear far too big. They continually restrict food to lose dramatic amounts of weight. They often wear bulky clothes or sweaters to mask their actual body size. It is also accompanied by the over use of laxatives; and or diet pills. Low self esteem and being over perfectionistic. Maintaining rigid control and excessive exercise. Depression, deceitfulness, guilt and irritability are often present as well. Anorexics are proud of their ability to restrict and control the amount of food they do or do not consume. Voluntary starvation can lead t emaciation and sometimes death.
Let’s look at some of the symptoms for bulimia. The person is caught up in a binge-purge pattern of eating. They can consume vast amounts of food and relieve themselves by self induced vomiting, They often observe food rituals. Low self esteem and being overly perfectionistic are apparent. The person looses control once they start eating. Food actually becomes a calming agent and somewhat of a companion. One common bond in anorexia and bulimia is the person really wants relationship and the approval of others. It is highly likely that there has also been sexual abuse. It is important that you lovingly confront someone with an eating disorder. It is important that you are honest about the way they look. You must be willing to take the risk at them being upset. You should also be willing to take part in their healing. It is important that they receive the professional help they need. You too will need support during their recovery process. It is most helpful to learn more about eating disorders.
There are cases when a person is a combination of the two. This is known as bulimarexic. They vacillate between the two disorders. It can be confusing because the individual does not acknowledge there is a problem. Denial is present since they do not actually fall into either category. Weight gain or loss, digestive problems, heart problems. anemia, forgetfulness, erosion of tooth enamel, glandular functioning, hypoglycemia, and impulse control order are some of the many side effects.
How does one heal? In severe cases an inpatient treatment program is best. A person’s weight must be closely monitored. In some cases initially treating them for depression is necessary. One thing that is necessary for healing is that they come to terms with the “Truth” of how they are feeling. One must make a conscious effort to look at their life, their family system and how they have been affected. In order to become whole they must learn to look at themselves, and others differently. Eating disorders are a family affair. Restructuring of the family interactions and dynamics are crucial. Obsessive compulsive issues to food and unrelated to food need to be addressed. Anorexia can affect major organ system functioning. The family system must be changed. Creating a healthy environment of honesty, love and support will facilitate healing. Healing takes time. But putting forth the effort is worth the time. Dysfunctional dynamics have often become the norm for many. The unhealthy use of defense mechanisms, the lack of the ability to be who they are, the need to please others and the rageaholic and /or controlling family issues must be dealt with.
God wants us to be whole. Being whole does not mean being free of conflict or problems. Life will continually present challenges. Challenges brings about spiritual growth and development. God also wants us to be perfect. Godly perfection does not mean being free of flaws. Godly perfection companions are an inward peace of mind and accepting the fact that God has uniquely created you. It means learning how to embrace who you are. Who God intended you to be. It means learning how to be content in the light of His Word. Then cautiously moving forward in life discovering who you are? To be perfect in Biblical terms simply means to be complete in Him. No it does not mean you have all the answers. But it does mean having a healthy relationship with God who does.
If you or someone you know has an eating disorder. Pray for or with them. I truly believe that as long or short as the Lord has us here it is to learn. When we learn all there is to learn, if you are His child He calls you home. Learning to relate to food, people, things, problems and situations is a lifetime learning experience. But you can start today if you have not already; living life differently. You can live life preparing for eternity. This will also relieve you of much unwarranted anxiety. God knows ever single solitary thing that has happened in your life and everyone else lives. God really does know your heart. God can and will teach you how to guard your heart properly. God wants you to have that abundant life His Son died for. He wants you to enjoy and learn how to properly nourish your body both spiritually and physically. He wants you to live a balanced life. He wants you to be emotionally whole.
Yes you will continue to have sorrow, grief and disappointments. Yes, the world is getting worse. Yes, life is and will be difficult at times. Drugs, alcohol, sex, money, food and yes even hard work can be all used in an attempt to fill emptiness in your life. There must be a balance. We must learn to properly relate to life in a manner that pleases God. In the midst of this world you /we are given the opportunity to have a Comforter! You see Jesus purpose was that we have life and have it more abundantly. This does not just mean materialistically. It means in every way. It is the enemy who comes to steal, kill, and destroy……. You do not have to focus on the enemy when you know that your life is truly in the hands of the Lord. Yes, it is important that you know how he operates. You do not have to focus on what others think when you know that God’s knows the depth of your heart, He knows why you do or do not do whatever! God can free you. He only can give you the peace that surpasses the understanding of man. Start anew today! God wants to fill the void in your life that only He can fill. Most important He loves us enough that He allows us the opportunity to choose. Allow His Holy Spirit, His Comforter to comfort and abide with you 24/7. I truly believe that there is absolutely positively nothing that is too big for God to handle. Begin today and everyday by allowing the Lord His place in your life, heart and home. He can help you and teach you how to properly physically, emotionally and spiritually nourish your body, mind and soul. God is your Maker and Creator. God has promised to work “all things” not some things which means even the bad things. God has said “all things work together for good. For those who love Him. For those who are called according to His purpose” When you are walking in the Spirit there is no condemnation. You can always trust, lean, depend, stand and count on God.

Eating Disorders – Bulimia Nervosa Effects
November 23rd, 2010Michael Russell asked:
In this second article on Bulimia Nervosa we’re going to go over the effects the disease can have on the body and how to treat it.
Bulimia nervosa can have devastating effects on a person’s body if the disease goes unchecked for a long period of time.
The most serious of these is electrolyte imbalances which are caused by the constant bingeing and purging. These imbalances can lead to irregular heartbeat. If the problem goes on long enough this can lead to heart failure and death. The actual cause of the electrolyte imbalance is because of loss of potassium and sodium from the body and dehydration because of the constant purging.
Another serious problem is caused by the frequent vomiting. That problem is inflammation of the esophagus, which at best can cause difficulty in breathing and at worst possible rupture.
Another problem people with Bulimia Nervosa suffer from, while maybe not as serious as the ones mentioned already, is tooth decay from the frequent vomiting. This decay can eventually lead to tooth loss. While that may not sound all that terrible, it has been shown in studies that people who have their own teeth live longer than people who wear dentures. So this is something to be concerned about.
Because of the constant laxative use a person suffering from this disease will eventually have infrequent and irregular bowel movements and most likely end up suffering from chronic constipation. This can cause more serious problems down the road if this condition persists for any length of time.
And finally there is the possibility of gastric rupture because of the binge eating. This particular problem is very rare, even in the worst cases of Bulimia Nervosa, but nevertheless the possibility still exists, especially if the disease goes untreated for any length of time.
And now, some facts and statistics about the disease itself.
Bulimia Nervosa affects between 1 and 2% of all teenage or young women. The reason for this is mostly psychological because girls at this age are very self conscious about their looks and when they develop this irrational fear that they are too heavy, resulting in a poor social life and low esteem, they are likely to fall pray to this disease because of those fears.
About 80% of all patients suffering from this disease are female. Again, this all goes back to society, especially TV commercials, convincing young women that they have to be skinny as rails and look like fashion models if they are going to be accepted.
The truth is, the majority of people who suffer from this disease will appear to be of average body weight and will not at all appear to be fat.
Oddly, many people with Bulimia Nervosa do recognize that they have a problem. They know that the habits they have picked up of bingeing and purging are not normal. Yet they are unable to stop themselves, much like a person who knows smoking is harmful but can’t quit.
Psychiatrists have determined that the onset of the disease is usually associated with depression, which is usually brought on by the person feeling inadequate as far as his or her appearance.
In our last article on this subject we’ll go over how a person with Bulimia Nervosa is treated.
